The Andy Warhol DiariesCheetah nightclub was a large discotheque on Broadway at 53rd Street, remembered in Andy Warhol’s diary as part of New York’s nightlife in the 1960s and as a former business of Olivier Coquelin. Its appearance in a 1976 office conversation connects the venue’s past to Warhol’s ongoing work on Popism.
Setting and Identity
Cheetah nightclub stood on Broadway at 53rd Street and was described as a big discotheque. The diary’s brief account places it within the city’s 1960s nightlife, identifying it through its scale, location, and role as a dance venue.
Recollection in the Diary
On November 30, 1976, Daniela Morera, Interview’s Italian correspondent, came to the office with Olivier Coquelin. Coquelin invited Andy Warhol to Haiti for the January wedding of Nima Farmanfarmian and Chris Isham. In the same conversation, Warhol noted that Coquelin owned Cheetah nightclub in the 1960s and suggested interviewing him for Popism. The club thus enters the diary not as the scene of a narrated night out, but as a piece of nightlife history that could inform Warhol’s account of the past.
